About The Village

Welcome to the Village!
The Troy Historic Village is a collection of 11 buildings surrounding a gazebo and green in the heart of Troy, Michigan. Filled with the collections and stories of the 1800s settlement and 1900s growth in the Troy area, staff and volunteers use these buildings to bring history to life for visitors of all ages. Our popular field trips might immerse students in an 1880s one room school or teach students that lighting a room wasn’t always as easy as flipping a switch. We offer programs, events, and activities for all ages. Cheddar our Village Mouse introduces preschoolers to the Village through story hour and exploration. Get more hands-on in the Blacksmith shop or at one of our workshops where students of all ages learn traditional trades. Our Teas at Two bring interesting topics and tea together in the historic Troy Church. You can join us for one of these programs or stop by for a self-guided tour during our regular hours.

The Troy Historic Village seed was planted back in 1927 when Morris Wattles spearheaded building a new Township Hall. The brick and slate building used beams and features from nearby historic structures and included a space to display objects from the past. In 1966 a group of citizens interested in preserving the stories and artifacts of Troy’s history came together to form the Troy Historical Society. When faced with having to move the 1832 Caswell House to save it from demolition, the space behind the Township Hall seemed perfect. A few years later the 1877 Poppleton School found a new home on the green as well, and the vision of a historic Village was born. Today, eight historic structures have been moved to site, two have been recreated, and the 1927 Township Hall serves as the visitor center and offices for the Troy Historic Village. The Troy Historical Society works with the City of Troy and Village Staff to activate discovery and cultivate life-long exploration of history by sharing and preserving heritage through creative, meaningful experiences that engage the community.
