As many prepare for the first camping trip or barbeque of the summer season, we ask our readers to consider the following opportunity in Troy to salute those who have given their lives in service to our nation.

On Monday, May 25, Troy citizens will gather at Veterans Memorial Plaza in front of Troy City to honor and remember the men and women who have given their lives for our country through their military service.Major Thomas P. Shields, USMC, Marine Corps, and Commander of the Detroit Military Entrance Processing Stationwill be the keynote speaker at this year’s event. The ceremony will also include music from the Heritage Concert Band of Troy; the raising of the colors by the Troy Police Department Honor Guard; the dedication of new veteran memorial bricks; and the laying of a Memorial Wreath.

The public is welcome to attend this event. The ceremony will last approximately one hour. For more information, contact the City of Troy’s Community Affairs Department at 248.524.1147.

To commemorate the City of Troy’s 60th Anniversary in 2015, we will publish a different story each day that highlights a person, discovery, or event that occurred locally, regionally, nationally, or even globally between 1955 and 2015 and that helped shape our lives and our community. We will try to post stories on important anniversary dates, but we also realize that dates are less critical than content and context. We will include the facts related to controversial stories, allowing our readers to form their own opinions. We invite you to read and comment on the stories. Your suggestions for topics are also welcome and can be posted on our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/TroyHistoricVillage. You can also email stories or ideas to the 365 Story Editor at ed@thvmail.org.
